THE TOWN CARRIAGE MUSEUM
The transition from the old Visitor Information Centre to a new and exciting Town Carriage Museum is now complete.
THE TOWN CARRIAGE MUSEUM - free entry, open 7 days a week, 9am to 4pm (excluding Christmas - see Visit Peterborough site for details)
The Town Carriage Museum is all about the town of Peterborough – past, present and future.
It offers community members and visitors alike the chance to see what makes the town special through a collection of 18 artefacts. These have been chosen to represent events in the town’s history, people of significance and aspects of life in the town. Presented together in a simple chronology – a timeline of sorts – through to the present day, they offer a complete picture and illustrate that this town is diverse, interesting and about much more than just railways.
Critically, it also encourages people to visit related (and equally diverse) attractions in town, engage and hopefully stay an extra day.
The display occupies the main compartment of the Commonwealth Carriage, with 18 small cabinets and information panels.
The Lionel Nobel Compartments
The two sleeping compartments in the carriage house photographs from the Lionel Noble Collection plus an incredible screening room. The screening compartment has had the window transformed in to a screen, showing moving landscapes along the narrow gauge line from Broken Hill to Port Pirie, complete with sound effects - a real must experience.
The newly accredited Visitor Information Centre can now be found at Steamtown, the western end of Main Street (click here for further info).
