Peterborough Tourism - SA Tourism Awards Winner 2015 with the Heritage Rail Trail!

‘Small regional councils can think as big as anybody’

A string of tiny towns along the remote Barrier Highway were the big winners when the judging panel of the South Australian Tourism Awards gave the 2015 Destination Marketing Award to Peterborough Council.

In January, Peterborough Tourism banded together with 13 small communities stretching 400km from Broken Hill to Port Pirie. Realising they were in possession of one of Australia’s greatest industrial stories, they formed the Heritage Rail Trail, which effectively told how a little 3’6” railway line took a vast mineral resource to the world.

“Today, that railway line is disused and many of these communities are struggling,” said Mayor Ruth Whittle of Peterborough. “But the part they played in transforming Australia from an agricultural economy to an industrial economy was profound.

“We had this fantastic story. We just needed to find a compelling way to tell it.”

When the Heritage Rail Trail was launched in January, Peterborough Council set a simple goal: to get travellers on the Barrier Highway to stop and spend a little time in these towns.

The Council also set targets by which they could measure the Trail’s success, including annual visitation to Peterborough’s Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre.

“I hope we proved that size is no barrier to success,” said Mayor Whittle. “This award clearly shows that small councils can think just as big as anybody.”

Peterborough’s Steamtown inducted into Hall of Fame!

Media release, November 5, 2014

The 2014 South Australian Regional Awards has seen Peterborough’s Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Supported by Brand South Australia, the Regional Awards are a benchmark of excellence that recognise people, enterprises and initiatives that have made a significant contribution to regional South Australia.

At the 2014 Awards night, held on October 28, the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre won the StatewideSuper Tourism Award.

This was its third Tourism Category award (Steamtown also won the category in 2010 and 2012) and for this achievement it was made a member of the Regional Awards Hall of Fame.

The judges said Steamtown has continued to put Peterborough and the Southern Flinders Ranges on the map of both local and interstate travellers and tourists.

Both awards were collected on the night by Steamtown Manager, Pat Kent (above, second from right).

Mr Kent thanked the Peterborough Council, Steamtown staff and the people of Peterborough for making the attraction a continued success during challenging times.

He also said he believed the new Peterborough Tourism website along with a new free mobile app is helping to make Steamtown and the attractions of the town more widely known among its core market, the increasingly tech-savvy ‘grey nomads’.

Brand SA CEO Ms Karen Raffen said the 2014 Regional Awards saw a record number of submissions making the competition stronger than ever before.
