District Council of Peterborough

Local Gov YouTube

Peterborough was founded on the railway and the historic Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre is featured in a new YouTube video which forms part of a campaign to highlight the role of Councils and jobs available in Local Government.

Peterborough CEO Peter McGuiness said the history of the area is of great interest to the community and it was important that Council plays its part in preserving our regions heritage.

”We’re pleased to be a part of this statewide effort to lift the profile of Council careers and services,” he said.

The campaign, co-ordinated by the Local Government Association (LGA), is using YouTube, social media and digital advertising for the first time to illustrate what Councils and their staff members do.

LGA President, MayorDavid O’Loughlin said the Association was delighted to be able to provide genuine messages about Councils showing real staff, in real scenarios in our communities.

“YouTube presents a fresh, economical way to do this with a wide audience appeal and we’ve filmed real people talking about real projects. We are tremendously excited by the range of activities Councils have put forward,” he said.

MayorO’Loughlin said Kimba’s story was an excellent of example of how Councils work to support communities.  “We want the public to know what Councils do and the great career opportunities available, he said.

“Councils have an ageing workforce so over the next few years we need to attract new staff - in a myriad of highly competitive skilled areas such as planning, engineering, animal management, accounting and environmental health.

“Councils are a great place for passionate people who are dedicated to their communities. Councils offer stimulating careers, job satisfaction and security and safe and flexible workplaces because they want their staff to be happy and engaged in serving their communities.

“Best of all these jobs are located where you already live, or are right acrossSouth Australia's great regions and in metropolitanAdelaide.”

Mr McGuiness said Peterborough was founded on the rail but time have changed and now only the Indian Pacific runs through the town.

“The Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre is a museum with an absolute difference, documenting and displaying the history of rail through a light and sound spectacle which follows the advent of rail, through General McArthur’s 1942 claim that he would return, to the current situation,” he said.

The LGA Awareness Campaign branding was launched late in 2012 with an expected life of five years and other aspects of the campaign have been rolled out progressively.

“We are also doing some traditional print, radio and television messaging but I think a YouTube video on every Council website, for viewing by the whole community, is going to have a great public response,”MayorO’Loughlin said.

South Australian Councils employ more than 10,000 people in a wide cross-section of careers, performing services for communities. The careers campaign will highlight the many opportunities for employment on people’s own doorsteps, working with their own Councils.
